6ème History/Geography Programme

History Aims

The programme studies life and developments in the Egyptian and Roman Civilisations, Early medieval Britain and the Byzantine Empire.

The main themes are:

  • Historical change: how and why it occurs in politics and power; religion; work and labour; technology; human rights
  • The impact of historical change on society
  • The role of individuals in history
  • Historical evidence, interpretation and bias
  • Empathy with the lives of different groups of people at different points in time
  • The concept of historical time (its division, measurement, recording).

 

Geography Aims

The programme studies the physical (climatic/ biogeographical / geomorphological) and human characteristics of the world and specific geographical areas (hot/cold/mountain and coastal zones).

The main themes are:

  • The concept of place and region; unity and diversity
  • The relationship between human activities and the natural environment
  • The description, measurement and representation of spatial organisation
  • Different forms of geographical information (its collection, measurement, interpretation, representation)
  • Sustainable development/ environmental protection
  • Biosphere/ ecosystem/ adaptation

 

Cross-curricular links with the English Department

Cold Zones and Snow Trip: Students study the physical features and geological processes of the cold zones - mountain formation, glaciers, and human adaptation to extreme climate conditions in their geography classes and read the Non Fiction - Snow Experiences in their English classes.

Roman Drama: A dramatization of aspects of Roman life studied in history classes includes speeches created and performed by students using the language and oratorical techniques studied in the reading of 'Julius Caesar'
