5ème History/Geography Programme

History Aims

The programme studies life and developments in Medieval Britain, Islamic civilizations, the Renaissance, Voyages of exploration and the global expansion of European culture during the 15th and 16th centuries and the English Civil War.

The main themes are:

  • Historical change:  how and why it occurs in political power; religion; industry ; technology; human rights
  • Social and political hierarchies
  • The impact of historical change on society
  • The role of individuals in history
  • Historical evidence, interpretation and bias
  • Empathy with the lives of different groups of people at different points in time
  • The concept of historical time (its division, measurement, recording)

 

Geography Aims

The programme studies the physical (climatic/ biogeographical / geomorphological) and human characteristics of North and South America and the specific investigation of Brazil. The main themes are:

  • The concept of place and region; unity and diversity
  • The relationship between human activities and the natural environment
    The description, measurement and representation of spatial organisation
  • Different forms of geographical information (its collection, measurement, interpretation, representation)
  • Sustainable development/ environmental protection/measuring development/inequalities
  • Biosphere/ ecosystem/ adaptation

 

Cross-curricular link with the English Department

Renaissance Plays and Feast: Students draw on their knowledge of Shakespearean theatre and language (from their reading of Romeo and Juliet) to write and perform dramatizations of different aspects of the Renaissance studied in their history classes.
