History Aims
The programme studies developments in Europe and the impact of European civilisation on the world from the Middle Ages to the mid 1800s focusing on Renaissance, Reformation, and the European conquest of the Americas.
The main themes are:
- Historical causes: change and continuity in politics and power; religion; industry ; technology; culture; human rights ; territorial division
- The impact of historical change on society
- The role of individuals in history
- Injustice/ inequality/relativism
- Historical evidence analysis, interpretation and bias
- Empathy with the lives of different groups of people at different points in time
Geography Aims
The programme studies specific geographical issues (demography, urbanisation, industrial systems, environmental change, migration, refugees, and the problem of water) in a global context.
The main themes are:
- The concept of place and region: uniqueness, specificity, similarity; unity and diversity
- The relationship between human activities and the natural environment
- The description, measurement and representation of spatial organisation
- Environmental problems/ Sustainable development
- Independence/ dependence/ inter-relationship
- Geographical enquiry/ problem solving/ decision- making process
- The inter-relationship between geography and the other social sciences
- Geographical process: cause/ consequence
The program contains an urban fieldwork component conducted on selected sites in Lyon. Students collect, analyse, compare and assess survey data relating to urban function and environmental quality.
